TOP 10

Parents often ask me how to capture that winning photograph.  How do you provoke that gorgeous smirk, jovial laugh or precious giggle?  Well there are lots of ways…each child is different…but here are some of my favorite tricks:

My TOP 10 TIPS on how to get great photos of your children!

1.  Bribe them! Promising a cookie, lollipop or ice cream at the completion of the photo session is a great way to garner enthusiasm!
2.  Put on some music. Dance and jump!
3.  Sing.  Whenever I sing to a child it makes them smile. A slow, genuine smile. My voice is not great….they just love to hear singing….nursery rhymes or Beatles songs…doesn’t matter…
4.  Questions and silly answers…(ie: What does a duck say? Meow? Meow. Meow. Noooo?! Does a duck say moo?)
5.  Reverse psychology: “whatever you do, Aidan, noooo laughing!” Works EVERYTIME.
6.  Peek-a-boo! (when age-appropriate, of course….appeals from 4 months to 18 months)
7.  Swing them: have a parent or another adult spin them in their arms and then freeze and hug them close.
8.  Request moods: a la “simon says” show me happy! grumpy! surprised!
9.  ”Favorites”: engage them by getting them to talk about their favorite things—favorite food, favorite movie, favorite color, etc…as they are describing their favorites, they inevitably look up and smile…snap away at their glowing expressions….
10.  Dress up!  Cowboy hat? Scarf? Butterfly wings? Rain boots? Tutu? If they get to choose they are more likely to get excited about getting their photo taken.
REMEMBER Quantity:  Don’t hesitate to take A LOT of photos….You’re not going to get the one you LOVE in just a few shots….

More twins and their lil sis…

These 3 are ready for adventure and giggles!  We met in Central Park recently on a crazy summer day near Bethesda Fountain…precious twin boys and their stunning lil sis…you know there is NEVER a dull moment at their house!  I met this gorgeous family a couple years ago at their home in New Jersey.  The three of them were precious and small and so sweet with eachother….and their bond has definitely grown. I loved every minute I spent with them.

Strawberry Fields fun….

I met this pair a year ago and was so excited to get to see them again.  Avi and Gil met me in one of my favorite meadows in Central Park last month so I could get updated photographs and capture their delightful smiles.  They make my job so easy with their coy looks and their genuine affection for eachother….

Wonderful William

This is my new buddy William.  Can you get any more adorable than this? I don’t think so….

He’s got all the expressions that warm my heart: curious, silly, goofy, coy, ‘in charge’….so much expressed without a single word!  What a delight.  Can’t wait to track his progress over the next few years….

We met up recently at his favorite park…Alamo Square in San Francisco….

Drew and Leo at Lincoln Park

I had the pleasure of photographing this amazing family in Chicago last month on a gorgeous morning near the zoo…Drew is at that amazing age where standing still is not really option.  There is too much to see…and too much to explore…his little bro is wide-eyed and full of wonder…what fun we had…

princesses

Dance and spin. Giggle. Repeat.

I first photographed Mia when she was a newborn…just a couple weeks old.  Now she’s 4 and it has been such a pleasure to document her growth, her little sis Serena and their beautiful princess dresses!

San Francisco Kate

Little Kate has a fabulous pout that is almost as endearing as her smile—she loves fashion and she loves to tickle people and to dance.  No wonder we get along so well. :)  I love shooting in morning light…sunbeams make people sparkle!  These were taken on a beautiful Thursday morning earlier this month at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco…
